IT'S NOT OKAY FOR YOUR PETS TO EAT BUGS!!!

What happens when you pet eats bugs

Hi, My name is Leah Kay and yeah, it's been a while since I have been able to publish a hub story. Lots of reasons why but we won't go into details about that now.

I would like to tell you a "story" about something that happen to me a couple of years ago and very scary!!

If anyone has read my previous hubs or knows me-I'm constantly into some kind of mischief. My daddy says that I have ADHD!! I have gotten into so many things-even a few that almost cost me my life!

Well let me tell you about this one incident. After learning (the hard way) NOT to run away anymore, I soon stayed around free of my lead or leash whenever my parents were outside. It was summertime and I loved to be outdoors. Being that I'm a min pin and it's in my own nature to stalk and kill things that move; I have on occasions killed a few bugs, maybe a lizard or two.

Well, I got into stalking crickets and grasshoppers, injuring them, bringing them to my mommy and then eating them! They would laugh at me, because of the way I would stalk, and even try to jump up in the air in order catch those pesky critters. I didn't care too much for grasshoppers, only because they tickled me-so usually the got to live, but crickets on the other hand didn't live a very long life as long as I was around.

Thinking that I was being good and sticking around, my mommy and daddy let me go on eating those crickets. Thinking what harm could they cause me-right?

Well one night I got up and felt sick, I really didn't throw up; but sure wish I could have. Then it got to where almost nightly (I'm meaning in the middle of the night) I would get them up with a sick tummy-sometimes throwing up.

Then one Sunday morning I got up and for the first time I wasn't hungry, nor would I drink. Only because if I did, it would just come right back up. Now I have both my parents worried and very concern. They called the emergency vet and said to wait until Monday. Don't force no food into me, only water. So they were taking a syringe and forcing water into me. Some stayed down, some of it didn't.

Monday morning comes around and we are the first ones to the vet. One look at me, and the DR apologizes to my parents. Saying if he really knew I was that bad-he would had me in on Sunday. I had lost almost 3 lbs (that isn't good-since I'm so tiny) and I was severely dehydrated. I didn't even feel like rassling with the doctor or his assistant as they took me back and started me right away on an IV.

Once again for the 3rd time in my life-I'm separated from my parents! As I'm being treated, the vet is trying to figure out what has caused me to be so sick. Since getting into the Ant poison the previous year and almost dying-they have been super cautious about what I get near. So they knew it wasn't poison of any kind. So the next thing is to tell him of my daily habits.

Of course my parents tell them about me chasing the crickets. Right away this brought up the red flag to the doctor and test confirms his suspicion. I have developed stomach worms-severely!

First thing he states to them is that Grasshoppers are a big NO-NO to any size dogs! Grasshoppers don't dissolve and have known to cause blockage in the dogs intestines. Crickets and roaches carry the larvae to stomach worms-which has been know to be the second killing worms for dogs (heart worms being 1).

I had to stay at the vets hospital for two nights. Although I was finally able to go home, I was placed on limited special dogfood. I was still sick and throwing up and my parents were very worried about me. I couldn't go for walks and I couldn't be around other doggies. I didn't feel like it anyways. I couldn't spend anytime outdoors-only to do my duty; that's okay-I slept alot.

I had to go back for several repeat check-ups and had to be constantly wieghed to see if I was still loosing weight. I hadn't lost anymore-but I wasn't gaining either-this didn't worry my doctor. While at the hospital I had to have a special worming med and would have to go back for a second one.

when it came to the second one-the assistant was telling my mommy that the liquid medicine wasn't awful tasting, for she has sampled a little bit herself on her tongue. It was a thick white gooey substance, and I gave them the most god-awful "ick" noise that I could mustered up. All those around died laughing at me-for I showed her that it did taste awful and she didn't know what she was talking about.

I still wasn't out of danger. Those pesky stomach worms are fighters (just like me). It only takes one lavae to survive and I have had all the treatment I can have. The next step is the same treatment they use for Heart Worms-arsenic. due to my size-they say I would not survive such harsh treatment and would not recommend it. Only time would tell...If I started to gain my weight back-then I would be out of danger. If not....

Well lets just say that was a few years ago and I'm still full of mischief!! I firmly get scolded now even if I try to pick ANYTHING up in my mouth!!! No more bugs, grasshoppers and yes crickets. I still stalk those lizards-but my parents are right there and they won't allow me to catch one!

So PLEASE, PLEASE all you doggie lovers and pet owners-DON'T allow your love one to eat bugs! They are VERY dangerous to our health-no matter what you think otherwise!! I'm so thankful that I have loving parents and take care of me-even when they scold me....
