About these books...
What you'll find here are real reviews of dog training books that I actually own, and the books that I refer back to most often. These are the books on positive methods of puppy/dog training, canine behaviour, etc. we most often recommend to students at the obedience school where I teach part-time.
For the new dog owner or student dog trainer, it can be hard to know where to start to choose a book to be a guide. Hopefully, this page will be a help to you!
Training Guide for CGC / CGN Certification
Your goal - a dog with good manners!
Jack and Wendy Volhard, authors of Dog Training for Dummies, also wrote The Canine Good Citizen: Every Dog Can Be One, an essential guide for any dog owner who'd like to prepare their pet to take the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen certification test.
In Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club's Canine Good Neighbour program is comparable.
For those who are interested in going on to pet therapy programs with their dogs, the CGC or CGN test is a recommended "next step" after your basic obedience course.
(p.s. The tough little character in this photo, pretending to be in jail for bad behaviour, is one of mine. She's not quite at CGN level yet - still wants to go out and meet the whole world and get loved - but she's learning!)

This photograph shows a 7-year-old "special needs" greyhound, a foster dog who spent 3 years at the track and 4 years in a very busy home with three other dogs, a small child, and two adults who tried to stay sane while holding down full-time jobs. Needless to say, he didn't get much in the way of attention or training as a companion dog.
See the wonderful eye contact I'm getting from heel position? Ten days ago this dog didn't know his name, barged through doors before they were half open, jumped on guests and furniture, and put his front feet up on the kitchen counter in search of any random crumbs. He's already showing some very nice manners and love-love-loves to go to school and learn new things!
Training & Learning - It Just Never Ends!
I'm going to be updating this page from time to time, as needed, because new books on dog training come out just about every month - and our understanding of dog psychology is also changing as time goes on. Not to mention, I find that with every new obedience training class, there's one dog student or one training challenge that comes up that has a way of shaking up my opinions of the best way of going about things! It's one of the things I love best about dog training - we, the trainers, learn just as much as the dog!
