Toto, Dorothy's Little Dog in The Wizard of Oz

Toto in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, 1900

But what dog breed is Toto?

The Original Toto, 1900

A close look at Denslow's illustrations for the original 1900 book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, are inconclusive with regard to Toto's breed.

Certainly, it's clear that Toto is intended as a small dog in the Terrier group, however... possibly a Yorkshire Terrier or a CairnTerrier, or perhaps (Toto is, after all, a tough little Kansas farm dog!) a mixed-breed mutt with a strong dose of spunky terrier in his bloodlines.

Baum does not identify Toto's breed in the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, or in its sequels.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkie lovers make a strong case for a Yorkshire Terrier as the original Toto (1900). While it is entirely possible that L. Frank Baum, as author, may have had a mongrel in mind for Toto, the illustrator William Wallace Denslow (according to Yorkshire Terriers For Dummies) to have owned a Yorkie. And what could be more natural than to use his own dog as a model for drawings of Toto?

Cairn Terrier

When it comes to Toto's breed in 1939 film adaptation, we're on firm ground.

The dog who graced the silver screen with Judy Garland was most definitely a Cairn Terrier - that's well documented, as are most things to do with Hollywood casting decisions.

Cairn Terriers come in a variety of coat colours, shades of brown from tan to chocolate and grey sometimes dark enough to count as black. As the 1939 Wizard of Oz was in black-and-white, in my imagination he was a lot like the little Cairn pup in this photograph. In fact, the dog who played Toto in the movie was not only brindle but also a female!

The role of Toto in the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, was played by Terry, a female brindle Cairn Terrier who appeared in more than a dozen movies in her career. Terry was owned and trained by Carl Spitz., who changed her name to Toto when the MGM movie proved a hit. She died in 1945 at the age of ten or eleven years.

West Highland Terrier

"Because The Wizard of Oz The Musical is a live-theatre technically advanced collaborative piece, with a large on-stage cast and off-stage technical team, it is essential that the dog playing Toto is a 'people person' - friendly to all and pleased to see everybody. Westies are therefore the perfect choice." Gerry Cott

"Each Toto brings his own distinct personality and tempo to the role with the common denominator being that all the dogs have a warm, friendly and outgoing personality with a keen intellect," trainer Gerry Cott writes on his blog (A-Z Dogs in The Wizard of Oz at The London Palladium). "West Highland Terriers are clever little dogs, full of vim and verve!"

Sounds like the Toto we know and love, doesn't it?

For the North American tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical, the role of Toto was awarded to a a trio of Norfolk Terriers, owned and trained by Terry Shevchenko of London, Ontario, Canada. Star of the show is 9-year-old Tilley, veteran of several local theatre productions of Oz already. Her 6-year-old twins buddies Winnie and Neddy share the role.

The wire-haired little Norfolk Terrier breed, like the feisty Westies, loves nothing better than to be around people and show off a bit, so a superb choice for a career in show biz!
